KOKAND IS Uzbekistan's most beloved city. There are many reasons for this. The historic city center with its historic monuments, its ancient museum. Kokand is also known throughout the world as a "City of Poets". www.arxiv.uz It is Kokand's charm  that is to be thanked for this unique mixture of old and new. Kokand - one of the most famous cities in Uzbekistan, formally the capital of the powerful Kokand Khanate which once dominated the whole Fergana Valley. www.arxiv.uz Kokand is situated in  Fergana province at the southwestern edge of the Fergana Valley. Kokand sits at the junction of two main routes into the Fergana Valley, one leading northwest over the mountains to Tashkent, and the other west through Khujand. www.arxiv.uz Kokand is a center for  the production of textiles, food, and chemicals. Kokand has existed since at least the 10th century, when it was known as Khavakend and was located on a caravan route between India and China. www.arxiv.uz In 1740 it became the capital  of an Uzbek khanate (a state ruled by khans) that reached as far as Qyzylorda to the west and Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to the northeast. Kokand was the major religious center of the Fergana Valley under the khans. At one time it had more than 300 mosques. Russian imperial forces captured the city in 1876. www.arxiv.uz The palace of Khudayar Khan  (1871) sits in the center of the city. The palace of the last Kokand ruler Khudoyor Khan is the most significant architectural monument of Kokand. The richness and gorgeous decorations of the khan's palace is striking. www.arxiv.uz The ornamentation of the Palace  includes mosaic of small glaze bricks, Ghancha carvings and murals and wood carvings. The first Russian traveller, who visited Kokand, wrote the following about the capital of the Khanate in 1833, "This is a vast and populous city with an estimated 400 mosques..." In 1878, Maria Bourdon, a Frenchwoman, visited Kokand with her husband. www.arxiv.uz Maria recounted her impressions in the book "From Paris to Samarkand". Among other things, the book contained an interesting description of the interior decoration of the palace which then had 113 rooms. The Modarikhan Mausoleum associated with the name of the poetess Nadira, is of interests well. www.arxiv.uz This is a small crypt  with two minarets. The death of Nadira - wife of the Kokand ruler and the poet Umarkhan Amiri - was tragic; executed by the order of Nusrulla, the Bukhara Emir. www.arxiv.uz Skilful artists and artisans  have made worthy contributions to the history of Uzbekistan by creating remarkable applied art and artifacts. Many technical and secondary schools are in Kokand. It is a city of poets, writers and actors, it is a centre of "askia" -witty Uzbek humours. www.arxiv.uz
